SHM Special Interest Groups

Connect with other members who share your interests.

Overview

Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are designed to create communities of hospitalists around topics of interest, practice areas and/or care models. Joining a special interest group allows you to collaborate, share experiences with your peers and have meaningful discussions that can directly impact your practice.

Join a SIG

Special Interest Groups are an exclusive member benefit. SHM members can participate in as many groups as they wish.

Joining a Special Interest Group is now simpler than ever! Log in to the Hospital Medicine Exchange, browse the full SIG listing page or go directly to the page of the group you're interested in, and click Join. It’s a quick and easy way to connect with peers who share your interests and advance your professional journey.

Start a SIG

Wish there were a group on a particular topic? Apply to start a SIG.

Thank you for your interest in starting a new Special Interest Group (SIG). Launching a SIG is one way to support SHM's volunteer leadership community. To this end, we want to ensure each proposal reflects both strong member interest and a well-defined focus. Please review our current SIGs to confirm your proposed topic fills a distinct need. To be considered, prospective submitters should be prepared to:

  1. Read and understand the SIG Leader Handbook
  2. Complete the New SIG Application Form
  3. Gather expressions of interest from SHM members who would join or benefit from the proposed SIG

If you're ready to take the next step, email sigs@shm.org to request the application form and a copy of the SIG Leader Handbook.

Maintain a SIG

SHM reviews each SIG on an annual basis to ensure it is meeting baseline requirements to maintain full SIG status. This is a concerted effort to ensure that all SHM members can be confident SIGs are providing meaningful networking, engagement, leadership, and education/learning opportunities, and that they are receiving a high-quality experience, worthy of their limited time.

To help SIGs and volunteer leaders maintain their SIGs, SHM had developed a SIG Handbook.

SIGs that do not meet the baseline criteria set forth will be sunset. SHM invites any member interested to apply for re-establishment of a SIG by completing an application and petition here above.
